ESS with Compressed RAID - RAID Designer

Use this tool to help design a local RAID array. Select one entry from each of the four boxes, and a table will auto populate with your array specs.

Model Details

  • ESS is configured to present 95% of the raw space to the application.
  • These calculations assume file systems are 85% full and fstrim is used.
  • ESS writes in large linear chunks. Some SSDs (such as consumer drives) do not completely eliminate write amp with this style of linear writes.

Over Provisioning

You can "over provision" an array. This lets you create an array that is larger than the backing SSDs. With compressible data, you can do this, but there are cavaets.
  • You have to monitor space usage. If you run out, your array will go to "READ ONLY".
  • Write amp goes up and array life goes down.
  • You must decide how much to over-provision when you format the ESS device.
  • Over provisioning uses more system RAM.
